How to Fight Allergies in Dogs: Natural Solutions That Work

Just like humans, our canine companions can suffer from allergies too and when they do, it can seriously affect their quality of life. From incessant itching and red, irritated skin to digestive troubles and chronic ear infections, dog allergies are more than just an inconvenience. Thankfully, there are some powerful, natural options that can help support your dog’s immune system and reduce allergy symptoms. Let’s explore how to fight allergies in dogs…

Understanding Allergies in Dogs

Before diving into remedies, it’s important to understand what’s going on. Allergies in dogs are an overreaction of the immune system to substances that are usually harmless, like pollen, dust mites, certain foods, or even flea saliva.

Common signs of allergies in dogs include:

  • Itchy skin (scratching, licking, or chewing)
  • Red or inflamed ears
  • Watery eyes
  • Sneezing or coughing
  • Digestive issues (diarrhea, vomiting)
  • Chronic ear infections or hot spots

If your dog is showing any of these symptoms, it’s worth speaking with your vet to determine the cause. Once diagnosed, incorporating natural immune-supporting supplements can play a powerful role in managing symptoms.

1. Colostrum: Immune System Reset

Colostrum is the first form of milk produced by mammals after giving birth, packed with antibodies and immune-modulating compounds. Bovine colostrum (from cows) is commonly used in dog supplements and offers incredible benefits for dogs with allergies.

Why colostrum helps:

  • Contains proline-rich polypeptides (PRPs) that help regulate the immune system, either boosting it when it’s weak or calming it when it’s overreacting (like in allergies).
  • PRP is also anti-inflammatory and can reduce histamine that triggers allergic reactions. Bovine colostrum also supplies your dog with antibodies to common allergens. That’s because cows develop antibodies to pollen, fleas and other allergens.
  • Rich in immunoglobulins that can help neutralise allergens and pathogens in the gut.
  • Supports gut health, which is closely linked to immune balance.

You can give colostrum in powder or capsule form, usually sprinkled over your dog’s food. It’s most effective when given on an empty stomach. Most dogs tolerate it well, and some even enjoy the taste!

2. Mushrooms: Nature’s Immune Modulators

Mushrooms like Reishi, Turkey Tail, Shiitake, Maitake and Cordyceps have been used for centuries to support the immune system. In dogs with allergies, they can be incredibly helpful in calming chronic inflammation and regulating immune responses.

Benefits of medicinal mushrooms:

  • Contain beta-glucans, which help modulate the immune system, reducing overactive responses without suppressing immunity.
  • Have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
  • Support liver function, helping detoxify allergens from the body.

Look for mushroom supplements made specifically for dogs, ideally with a full-spectrum extract (including the fruiting body) and no fillers.

Make sure you cook or dehydrate them before feeding to your dog – never feed them raw.

3. Quercetin: Nature’s Antihistamine

Quercetin is often referred to as “nature’s Benadryl.”

Why it works:

  • Quercetin blocks the release of histamine, the compound responsible for allergy symptoms like itching and swelling.
  • Has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that soothe irritated tissues.
  • Works synergistically with bromelain (an enzyme from pineapple), which enhances absorption and adds anti-inflammatory benefits.

For best results, quercetin supplements for dogs are usually given 30–60 minutes before meals. Make sure you’re using a pet-safe product before feeding to your dog.

Bonus Tips for Managing Allergies Naturally:

  • Regular baths with hypoallergenic shampoo: Helps wash off allergens and soothe itchy skin, especially after walks.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids: Help reduce inflammation and support skin health.
  • Probiotics: Support gut health and may help reduce allergic reactions over time
  • Dorwest – Garlic & Fenugreek: A licensed herbal medicine in a tablet form, for the symptomatic relief of skin conditions, arthritis, coughs and minor infections in dogs.
  • Proflax – Tummy Tastic: A power-packed powder formula that supports a healthy balanced gut microbiome and digestive system. It keeps tummies happy and supports optimal immune function.

Every dog is unique, and with the right approach, you can help them live their happiest, itchiest-free life.
