Desensitising your puppy from fireworks
As the darker nights begin to draw in, it means the run up to Bonfire Night is getting closer. Fireworks can be a terrifying experience for puppies, but with patience and the right approach, you can help your pup remain calm during these noisy celebrations. Desensitising them to fireworks involves gradual exposure and positive reinforcement, which builds their confidence over time.
- Start Early and Slow
Begin desensitising your puppy from now, before any major events like Halloween, Bonfire Night and New Year’s Eve. Play recordings of fireworks sounds at a low volume (you can easily find them on YouTube). Play them for a few minutes daily during positive activities, such as playtime or feeding. Gradually increase the volume over time, making sure your puppy remains relaxed at each stage.
- Create Positive Associations
During these sessions, engage your puppy in fun activities or offer treats. This will help them associate the noise with something positive, reducing their fear. Make sure your puppy feels safe and happy—never force them to face the noise if they seem too anxious.
- Use a Safe Space
Create a calm, secure area in your home where your puppy can retreat if they feel overwhelmed. If you use a crate, make sure they have their favourite toys, blankets, and maybe even a piece of clothing with your scent to comfort them. Make this space available to them during fireworks.
- Stay Calm Yourself
Dogs often mirror their owners’ emotions. If you stay calm and composed, your puppy is more likely to feel reassured. Avoid over-comforting them, as this can reinforce fear. Instead, act normal and carry on with regular activities.
